The technique of burning wood with electricity or Lichtenberg wood burning is one of the cool tricks to create random figures on wood.
This technique has been tested by many people in recent years and there are various experiences in this field.
There are many points and details which are important to get the desired result with the process of Lichtenberg wood burning.
One of the things that will greatly affect the outcome is the solution used in this technique. In this article, we will look at the Lichtenberg wood burning solution and its related tips. Stay with us.
What is the Lichtenberg Wood Burning Solution?
If you are familiar with the Lichtenberg wood burning process, you know that you need an electrolysis solution to do it. This solution helps the electricity to pass through the wood. See does wood conduct electricity?
The solution used in the Lichtenberg wood burning technique has many different types that people choose based on their experience.
The most popular solutions used for this purpose are:

One of the modern techniques for creating wooden artwork is called Lichtenberg wood Burning. In this eBook, we are going to introduce this newfound art to you.
This technique is known with some different names such as Lichtenberg wood burning, fractal wood burning, and electricity wood art.
This technique should not be confused with wood burning art or pyrography. The art of pyrography on wood is the art of creating motifs and designs by burning with hot metal tools on objects such as wooden surfaces.
Lichtenberg burning is a wood-burning technique for creating designs with electricity.
This eBook is a comprehensive guide on Lichtenberg Wood Burning. All you need to know for Lichtenberg Wood Burning is here.

- Water and salt solution
- Water and baking soda solution
Making Conducting Solution
For making a conducting solution, it seems that most use a baking soda mixture of one cup of water and a tablespoon of baking soda for fractal burning.
You can use salt in water, where it has the same results as baking soda. But we found that, in some woods, baking soda really darkens the color. Try with your wood piece and see what works best for you.
All in all, eventually you’ll need a solution. Dry wood itself will not conduct electricity, so we have to make a conducting solution for the surface of the wood.
Making Best Lichtenberg Wood Burning Solution
You will need:
- Baking soda (Also known as sodium bicarbonate)
- Water
Pour a minimum of 1/2 cup water (room temperature) into a drinking glass. Set the glass aside. Measure 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Add the baking soda into the glass of water.
Stir the water and baking soda mixture with a spoon until the granules are completely dissolved. Baking soda is soluble in water at 274 oz. of baking soda to 3.5 oz. of water at 64 degrees Fahrenheit.
This solution can be called the best Liechtenstein wood-burning solution.
How Much Will You Need From This Solution for Lichtenberg Wood Burning?
The amount of electrolyte solution that should be applied to the wood project is difficult to determine. It’s based on several factors including the type of material, how the wood absorbs the solution (types of wood), its moisture, and even the air humidity.
- A very small amount of solution won’t conduct enough electricity to create a pattern.
- Using a large amount of solution (freely on the wood surface) will not generate enough heat to burn the wood.
Anyway, the wood doesn’t need to swim in the solution, apply it, and soak the wood gently. Leave the wood for about 5 minutes to soak up the solution. Now it’s ready to be burned!
Conclusion
In this article, we discussed the Lichtenberg wood burning solution.
You will ultimately need your own experience to make this solution. For example, some people have found empirically that they can add a little soft drink to this solution. But the best solution for Lichtenberg, however, is the combination of water and baking soda.
Note that before applying the solution, you should thoroughly smooth the surface of the wood with sandpaper. After sanding the surface of wood, you must apply the solution.
Dip your paintbrush in the conducting solution and apply it to the surface of the wood.
