There are many people who are interested in new wood arts. One of these modern wood arts, which has recently found many fans, is Fractal Wood Burning.

There are a lot of questions about the wood types used for fractal burning. Although you can do this method on all the types of wood, what is the best wood for fractal burning?

In this fascinating technique, burning wood is done by applying high voltage electricity that creates interesting designs on the wood.

To get to know this art, I suggest you see the fractal wood burning art. This technique is also known as the Lichtenberg Art or Lichtenberg wood burning art.

If you love burning wood with electricity stay with us to the end of this article to get to know the right wood for fractal burning.

Which Kinds of Natural Wood Are Suitable For Lichtenberg Art?

Cedar wood is one of the best woods for fractal burning

There are some kinds of wood you can use to create the best Lichtenberg figure on the wood.

It can be said that in general any kinds of hardwood is suitable for fractal burning.

One of the modern techniques for creating wooden artwork is called Lichtenberg wood Burning. In this eBook, we are going to introduce this newfound art to you.
This technique is known with some different names such as Lichtenberg wood burning, fractal wood burning, and electricity wood art.
This technique should not be confused with wood burning art or pyrography. The art of pyrography on wood is the art of creating motifs and designs by burning with hot metal tools on objects such as wooden surfaces.
Lichtenberg burning is a wood-burning technique for creating designs with electricity.

Although any kind of wood will work, some factors such as thickness, texture, and grain direction will all result in different looks.

Different people likely have different experiences in this field.

Note that other factors, such as the voltage level and the amount of wood moisture, affect the final work.

So choosing the right wood for fractal wood burning depends on several factors.

But in general, the experiences of different people indicate that woods such as walnut wood, olive wood, oak wood, and cedar wood, are the bests for fractal burning.

Also, some of the softwoods with a bright color such as basswood and pinewood are suitable for this work. Pinewood burns the hottest.

What is The Best Wood For Fractal Burning?

Electricity will always travel on the path of least resistance, so you can determine the path of a burned pattern. Given that the wet wood has less electrical resistance, you can add water and salt on the surface of the wood in the desired direction.

Therefore, the woods which absorb water better on their surface, are better choices for fractal wood burning.

With this logic, and according to the experiences of different people, OSB board and Plywood are the best wood for fractal burning.

OSB broad
OSB Board

This is because only the thin layer of wood on the top (veneer) absorb the solved water, creating the path of a Lichtenberg figure.

Oriented strand board (OSB) is a type of engineered wood, formed by adding adhesives and then compressing layers of wood strands in a specific direction.

Conclusion

Regarding the information above, if you want to use natural wood for fractal burning, you should know that there is no specific limitation. It works on any wood. see Cool Ideas of Lichtenberg Wood Burning.

Experiences from different people show that the following woods give the best result:

  • Walnut wood
  • Olive wood
  • Oakwood
  • Cedarwood
  • Basswood
  • Pinewood

But if your question is, what is the best possible wood for this technique, our answer:

  • OSB board
  • Plywood

If you still insist on recommending one between OSB and plywood, as the best wood for fractal burning, I would say OSB because it has a lower price! So OSB board is the winner here 🙂

When brushing water /baking soda on wood to be burned ,how do you prevent the wood from water staining and being different colors from what wasn’t brushed?

    • Use borax instead. Also, never use a MOT for this. Please. It will kill you, and it will hurt the whole time you are dieing. If you see flames leaping off the board you are doing it wrong.

The burns are deeper and uglier than if you use a higher voltage, too (I like the detailed “fiddly bits”). Use a higher voltage with a means to place/hold the probes while you stand several feet away and flip a switch.
