Cinnamon, a Fragrant Tree!

Cinnamon is obtained from a plant species called Cinnamomum. Cinnamomum plant is a genus of evergreen aromatic trees and shrubs belonging to the laurel family, Lauraceae. They grow mainly in warm temperate and tropical regions, especially Southeast Asia and South America. Cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon).

The cinnamon tree is really aromatic (has a delicately fragrant aroma and a warm sweet flavor), the leaves, flowers, and bark are fragrant thanks to the oil in them.

What Does a Cinnamon Tree Look Like?

What does a cinnamon tree look like? If we want to describe it, we must say that it is an ordinary tree and has no hallmark. But after the harvesting process, the trunks of the cinnamon trees become bare! You can see it well in the image below.

Cinnamon Harvesting Process

It might be interesting to see how the cinnamon harvesting process works.

The first step to harvesting is to peel off the lower outer layer of bark on the tree. After about a month, the rest of the bark will be dried and pulled away from the main trunk to allow for easier harvesting.

The tree is then cut down and its bark is extracted.

In the next step, the outer layer of the tree bark is shaved and separated with a special tool (image below).

Finally, they are placed in a suitable place to dry completely.
